The statue of Maiden with the seagull by Zvonko Car (1956) is a very popular landmark in Optija, Croatia.
The statue, which overlooks the Mediterranean replaced and early statue of Madonna at this location. Madonna's statue which was installed here in late 19th century couldn't withstand the harsh weather and was later moved to Croatian Museum of Tourism in the Villa Angiolina.
The identity of the model who had posed for the statue remained unknown for several decades. The sculptor did not want to reveal the identity of the “Maiden with the Seagull” and was quoted as saying: "Those who want to know should make a guess!"
