The Galation Suicide


This work has been created from the Street View of a sculpture found in the concourse of The Palais Bourbon, the seat of the French National Assembly. Labelled as Les Galates vaincus (The vanquished Galatians) it is also called "The Galatian Suicide" and depicts a Gaul in the act of plunging a sword into his breast, looking backwards defiantly while he supports the dying figure of a woman with his left arm. The sculpture is one of the few replicas of an early 2nd century Hellenistic original commissioned by Attalus I after his victories over the Gauls of Galatia. (Wikipedia)

Colours and Colours

Found colourful rectangles on a wall of a Paper Factory at Dalum, Odense, Denmark. It is a long wall and a portion of the wall also has several geometrical patterns in monochrome.

Quack! Quack!!

Yellow Duckling on the roof of Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose. The sculpture on the roof keeps on changing. While the current (May 2011) street view shows this yellow duckling, earlier imagery of Feb 2011 showed a White Rabbit (probably of Alice in Wonderland fame) and even an earlier Street view imagery of 2008 showed a Pink Dog. The current 45 Degree aerial view of Google Maps shows a monkey (probably Curious George).

The Silent People

The Silent People is an amazing but a bit bizarre looking art work on a field on Highway 5 about 25 km. north of the town of Suomussalmi, Finland. It consists of about 1200 scarecrow like figures wearing colourful clothes with their heads made of peat. The clothes of these scarecrows are changed twice a year using the clothes collected from donation. Reportedly some visitors to the location occasionally exchange their dresses with those of the scare crow figures. No one knows the idea behind the Silent People. The artist, Reijo Kela, refuses to provide any answer and says that each viewer is free to make his/her own conclusions. (More information and photos in my Blog; Travelogue Of An Armchair Traveller).

VIBGYOR

A road side fence/partition in front of Siberia Restaurant in Saariselkä, Lapland Finland. The partition is made of coloured planks, which when seen from a certain distance/angle on the approach road displays a continuous band of rainbow spectrum colours - Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red aka VIBGYOR. I think such a work is called Anamorphic Art. To really appreciate it, it has to be seen in Google Street View.

Thirty Three Thousand, Seven Hundred and Ninety Eight

"Thirty Three Thousand, Seven Hundred and Ninety Eight" is the name of this beautiful sculpture at the Gatehouse of National Botanic Gardens of Wales. Created by Marion Kalmus, the inner side of glass cone has continuous cascade of running water highlighting the importance of water in our lives including plants. The number 33,798 which is etched on the glass sculpture depicts the number of plant species that were threatened by extinction in 2000 - the year when the National Botanic Garden of Wales opened.

Sky Bloom

Sky Bloom (officially "Her Secret Is Patience") is a sculpture by Janet Echelman at Civic Space Park, Arizona State University, Phoenix, Arizona. As per the artist the sculpture's shape reflects enormous ever changing cumulus clouds of Arizona. (Wikipedia) There is another similar sculpture by her in Portugal called "She Changes". Cloned from a commemorative calender found in "Expérience", Place Antonin Poncet, Lyon, France. The calender titled Une Année Avec Jean Jacques Rousseau (A year with Jean Jacques Rousseau) was created on the occasion of his 400th anniversary and contains works of several famous artists. (Source)

Red Umbrellas

Pegman dropped me to a big surprise in the form of these red umbrellas. My first impression was that these have been custom laid for the GSV car. A search on the Net however revealed that these were part of the an art installation for Paris Nuit Blanche - an annual all-night arts festival. (Source)

Trapped In An Atom

A fountain in "Bosque de Chapultepec" (Chapultepec Forest), Mexico City. To some the sculpture represents Valentine. When I saw this in Google Street View my first impression was that it represents a pair of swimmers, however a search on Google revealed its true name and purpose - The fountain/sculpture is called "Fuente de los Fisicos Nucleares" meaning Source of Nuclear Physicists.

French Art Market

619 Frenchmen Street a drab empty space with rusted iron gate, comes alive every week during the weekly night-time art market called "French Art Market". The market opens on Thursday evening and closes Sunday midnight and showcases the paintings and hand crafted items of local and regional artists.

Man Who Walked Through The Walls

Based on a short story Le Passe-Muraille (The Walker Through Walls) by French novelist Marcel Aymé. In the story the main character gained the remarkable ability of passing through the walls and used his skills for revenge as well as for robberies etc. More details and images in my blog - Travelogue of An Armchair Traveller.
